Boston Terrier Rescue of Greater Houston, Inc., was founded by Karen Toupard in July 2000. The group is comprised totally of volunteers who offer their time and talent to the mission of rescuing Boston Terriers in the state of Texas.

No dog, regardless of his or her background or medical condition, is refused. All dogs who come into care at Boston Terrier Rescue are treated for illnesses, if any (most commonly heartworms); are spayed or neutered; are administered all vaccinations; are de-wormed, bathed and have their nails clipped; and are placed on flea and heartworm preventative prior to being placed up for adoption.

This is a very special organization to Studio Roo, as this is where we adopted our beloved Boston Terrier, Jack, aka "Kowboy Jack" two years ago.  Boston Terriers, as we have discovered, are SIMPLY WONDERFUL dogs!

I cannot say what a delightful addition Jack has been to our family!  He is kind, inquisitive, loving, playful, sweet, caring, and has an enormous sense of humor, as you may see from the photos. He loves big brother lab-mix Cyrus, and plays with all the kitties.  He entertains our guests and loves people and children.  He has no bad habits, doesn't shed or have doggy-odor and was potty trained in days.  He has the run of the house, and he's never chewed up a thing.

If you're looking for a special pet for your family, I am telling you, this breed is for you!  We are just crazy about him! I'll never own another breed!

Spring is here, and, as an amateur gardener, I like to promote my favorite plants & products to anyone who will listen!  As you can probably tell from the website, some of my favorite flowers are roses.  Even if you know little about flowers, you can grow roses. These beautiful plants require not- a- lot of  knowledge and can thrive with little care in Texas.

Look for low maintenance "old" or "antique" roses which are FAR SUPERIOR to the black spot prone hybrids found at stores around town.  And the rewards...?  Well, you'll see!!

My favorite rose websites:

The Uncommon Rose
The Antique Rose Emporium
  Ashdown Rose Library

Excellent for the Houston/surrounding area:
Hedge or Specimen Roses:
Old Blush, Souvenir de la Malmaison, Mutabilis, Mrs. B. R. Cant, Penelope, Maggie or Belinda's Dream

Container or Low Border Roses:  The Fairy, Perle d'Or, Martha Gonzales, Gruss an Aachen, Marie Pavie or Cecile Brunner

Climbers:  New Dawn, Cl. Pinkie, Buff Beauty, Lamarque or Zephirine Drouhin.

Urban Harvest is a 501(c)(3) independent nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through gardening. We do this by building a network of inspirational and educational gardens and orchards throughout the greater Houston area. These build community health, vitality and pride. We carry out their mission by working with volunteers and community groups to build community and school gardens, and by teaching classes.

We help build communities from the ground up by promoting sustainable urban land and horticultural practices to grow food and reduce hunger.
YOU CAN HELP!

RESEARCH
FOR DOWN'S SYNDROME

This campaign was started by a group of local kids in Houston and is such a kind and thoughtful gesture in addition to a wonderful cause. It is to promote research specific to the cognitive enhancement for kids with Downs Syndrome. They are so close to finding a treatment, and one specially treated mouse can cost $40,000. Show your support by adopting a mouse for $21.95!

SmartScape™ utilizes xeriscape principles, but goes beyond the basics by providing design, care and plant search tools that are “Smart” for North Central Texas. The purpose of SmartScape™ is to educate our citizens on the ecological, economic and aesthetic benefits of using landscaping plants, shrubs, grasses and trees that are native or adapted to our regional climate and local conditions.

CAROLYN MURPHY CLYATT,

The sweetest rose, may she forever bloom.

Studio Roo wishes to offer our deepest condolences to our dear friend Julie and her family in the passing of their beloved mother, CAROLYN MURPHY CLYATT, born in Mobile, Alabama on February 8, 1937.  Carolyn passed away Sunday October 17, 2004. For those desiring, Memorial contributions may be made to the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Network of Houston (please specify "research") 2235 Cedar Falls Drive, Kingwood TX 77339. She will be remembered with fondness for those who knew her and sorely missed by those who loved her.

March 2005:  We'd like to also remember Julie's beloved beagle, Biggs, who recently passed away.  Our prayers are with you, Julie.

If you're going to landscape your yard anyway, why not do it to help the wildlife too?  It's simple to add plants that sustain life. And while you're at it, feed the birds!

It is so important to preserve our wildlife and local birds.  And birding is so much FUN!  Get the kids involved!  Buy a cheap pair of binoculars, set up a feeder station in your yard and let the feathers fly.  For the basics on setting up habitat, click here:  http://www.gwf.org/createhabitats.htm
